Even though Nokia sold its devices and services unit to Microsoft just seven months ago for a hefty fee, it is back making hardware again, this time with the pretty nice looking N1 tablet that bears a striking resemblance to the Apple iPad Mini.
Besides the iPad Mini similarities, you get the following specs:
- 2.4GHz quad-core Intel Atom Z3580 processor.
- 64-bit architecture
- 2GB of RAM.
- 32GB of storage.
- a reversible USB connector (think Apple’s lightning connector).
- 8-megapixel camera at the rear, 5-megapixel front facing camera.
What I find most interesting is the fact that its going to ship with Android 5.0 aka Lollipop. SInce Nokia has shed itself of Microsoft’s shackles, it’s heading head first into Android territory, which many critics are saying it’s about time. It runs on Nokia’s Z Launcher where you write out letters right on the screen, which gives you a list of apps and contacts that changes based on where you are and what you’re doing. You can do stuff like scribble a letter in the middle of the screen to look through installed apps or the Internet.
Noka plans to launch the Nokia N1 in China for $249 (before taxes) around the Chinese New Year (February 19th), and other countries after. Fingers crossed for an African release shortly after.
